PHOTOGRAPHER | ARTIST INTERVIEW ///
Photographer Alexandra Wallace has a fashion forward approach to the world of wedding photography. Her images feel straight from the pages of an Anthro catalogue with whimsical substance and mysterious appeal. During our photoshoot I discovered she was in a indie folk band during her teenage years and somehow she made more sense to me. This kind of girl just needs to create for creativity sake! Her parents are to thank for cultivating a creative environment for her to grow up in so it's no wonder she produces such artistic work. The example that her folks set for her in life, art, and business have really set her up on a foundation from which she can blossom into unimaginable exploits. How did your creative journey begin?
My parents met at Brooks Photography Institute, so you could say a creative path was set for me from the get-go! My dad had a background in motion picture and animation, and my mom worked as a photographer and interior designer. I always loved to draw and create when I was younger, and then in high school pursued filmmaking. I originally started to go to college to become a film director, but found that I wasn't really happy with the road I was heading down. Photography ended up being the perfect, happy medium for me!
What question do you always ask the Bride & Groom?
I always ask how they met! You can tell so much about two people by their love story and their journey together. Whether it's a couple that started dating in high school and have known each other their entire lives, or two people who met in the hall at work a year ago, I love hearing all of the details.
What's your business philosophy?
Always do what you love, and if you find yourself not loving something, change it. I think that it's very clear when someone is passionate about what they do, and no one wants to be working with a professional who's burnt out on their job. I think it's very important to make time for projects that keep you excited, even if it's not your bread and butter. Happiness and fulfillment are definitely keys to a successful business!
Who or what continues to inspires you?
I am constantly inspired by fellow creative people. I live with my boyfriend, who is a musician and overall creative jack-of-all-trades, and he constantly is inspiring me to continue creating. Between him and my parents, I'm never far from creative motivation!
How would you describe your ideal couple?
I am all about couples that love fun, and live in the moment. Planning a wedding is by no doubt overwhelming, but I love when people keep it real, and remember the reason for it all. It's my favorite to see a couple that is all smiles on their wedding day - I usually end up finding myself smiling just as big behind my camera!
What is your favorite part of a wedding?
I absolutely love the moment just after a couple have been pronounced man and wife, and seeing their facial expression when it sinks in that they've just gotten married. It's such a pure, unfiltered excitement that is hard to find anywhere else!
Tell us about your first job.
My dad owned a gallery and picture framing business in Santa Barbara when I was growing up, and I used to help him out during summers. It definitely opened my eyes to how hardworking he is, and how kindness, quality and integrity keep a small, local business afloat. It also set me up with a lifelong soft spot for NPR and the scent of lemon Lysol.
OK, tell us your Nickname(s)!
'Alli' - and I didn't even pick it! In elementary school, I played basketball [before all the other kids got way taller than me], and my coach decided 'Alexandra' was way too long of a name to call out on the court.
